SAP BusinessObjects in the Cloud

It’s time to start thinking about SAP BusinessObjects BI 4.3. But it’s also time to consider cloud-based analytics. No doubt you’ve heard about SAP Analytics Cloud, a relatively new offering from SAP that can connect to cloud-based data sources as well as on-premise data sources via a connector to your SAP BusinessObjects platform. But did you know that the SAP BusinessObjects platform itself can reside in the cloud?

In 2020, there are four basic patterns for running SAP analytics, summarized in the diagram below. Which one you choose will depend on where the majority of your corporate data resides. If most of your corporate data remains on-premise, you’ll likely choose one of the first two patterns, where the SAP BusinessObjects platform remains on-premise, with or without connectivity to SAP Analytics Cloud. If your corporate data has migrated to a public cloud such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, you’ll likely choose one of the last two patterns, where the SAP BusinessObjects platform is hosted in a public cloud, again with or without connectivity to SAP Analytics Cloud.

SAP BusinessObjects architectures for 2020 and beyond.

SAP Analytics Cloud, of course, is hosted in SAP Cloud Platform as Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). SAP BusinessObjects can be hosted in SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud (HEC) as Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS). Or it can be hosted in various public clouds using their Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS). Below I’ve reproduced the supported cloud platforms from the latest SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform 4.2 SP8 supported platforms (PAM), dated February 16, 2020.
