End of an Era – I Was New Once

In a barely-related-to-BI blog post tonight, I find myself unable to NOT write about the end of an era.  My first job out of college was with SBC Communications, before they dropped the “Communications”, after they changed from “Southwestern Bell”, before they changed to “ATT”, after they dropped the “ATT”.  Wait…meh?  I was hired into SBC many years ago as a green Business Objects developer.  I shared that story last year over on the SCN.

It’s a weird rush of emotions even though I’ve been gone for almost seven years.  Many people I still remember fondly still work there and keep the IT machine chugging along.  This tower held thousands and thousands of people, both IT and not, and takes me way back to the battle for supremacy with Walmart over who had the world’s largest Teradata data warehouse.

I really don’t know if your first gig with Business Objects was all puppies unicorns kittens and rainbows or not too.  It was for me.  It was an awesome ride.  I think this post is another stab at “doing what you love.”   That’s what my original SCN post was about and how SAP technologies got me there as the years have flown by.  If you aren’t doing what you love, you should be.

While it is just a building, I’ll miss it.  I learned a lot there.  I grew up a lot there. I guess, now, I know I’m never going back there.  I’ll need a plan C soon.
